Our History
Our Community Hall was built in 1864 as a meetinghouse for the First Universalist Society of Wells, which held worship services there until 1908. In 1910, The Wells Branch Community League was formed to lease the building for use as a Community House. Neighborhood activities over the years have included variety shows, minstrel shows, Christmas parties, and many other community events. The League became the Hall's official owner on September 9, 1956. Over the years the Hall has been improved by the addition of a new kitchen, indoor toilets (replacing our dear old two-holer outhouse!), central heating, and interior renovations. For over 50 years the Wells Branch Firemen's Association held its annual bean supper at the Hall. In 2014 the Wells Branch Community League achieved 501©3 non-profit status with the IRS. The League's primary function these days is to maintain the Hall for public use. Recent improvements include a new roof, window repairs, and exterior paint. Interior improvements are ongoing. Our Community Hall is rented out regularly for birthday parties, baby showers, and other functions. Along with the rental income, our Bottles for the Branch campaign brings in much-needed funds for building maintenance. Contact us for more information about the Wells Branch Community League. |
